Russia has yet to provide an official response to Finland's enquiry over the freezing of the bank accounts of a Finnish embassy and consulate office in Russia.

The bank accounts belonging to the Finnish Embassy in Moscow and the Consulate General's office in St Petersburg were frozen at the end of last month.

News agency Reuters later reported that the Kremlin blamed Finland for the decision to freeze the accounts, saying the move was a response to what it called the unfriendly acts of "the collective West."

The Russian embassy in Finland told the daily Izvestia newspaper on Friday that "attempts are being made to resolve the current situation", and that Russia is working with the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs to lift the restrictions on the accounts of the two Finnish diplomatic missions.

"It is still too early to talk about specific deadlines and possible ways to achieve a result acceptable to both sides," the Russian embassy told the newspaper.

Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto (Green) previously told Yle that the freezing of the accounts first came to light on 27 April.

Finland then sent Russia an official note in early May, seeking clarification.

On Friday, the Finnish Foreign Ministry told Yle it was still awaiting a reply from its Russian counterpart over why the accounts are frozen.

"No further information on the freezing of the accounts or a response to Finland's note has yet been received from Russia," Petra Sarias of the ministry confirmed.
