This past August saw warmer-than-usual temperatures across Finland with Lapland seeing record-high readings, according to preliminary data released by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) on Friday.
Three weather stations located across Finnish Lapland, in Kilpisjärvi, Utsjoki and Savukoski, all captured record-warm temperatures for the month of August.
FMI reported that the average temperature for the month varied from approximately 13 degrees in northern Lapland to just under 18 degrees in the southern areas of the region.
The highest temperature of the month, 33.6 degrees Celsius, was recorded near Rauma, southwestern Finland, on 7 August. The lowest reading, -2.3 degrees Celsius, was measured in Savukoski on 22 August.
The number of days that saw the mercury rise above 25 degrees Celsius was higher than the monthly average in Lapland, according to the institute. In contrast, southern and western parts of the country mostly experienced a lower count of such days.
August also saw higher-than-normal rainfall, particularly in Lapland and the western regions of the country. These areas received approximately double the typical amount of rain for August, with Hanko recording the highest rainfall at approximately 212.4 millimetres.
