The hub of the Helsinki Metro, the Central Railway Station, will be renovated next summer, confirmed Johanna Wallin, the Helsinki Regional Transit Authority's (HSL) Transport Director.

"Fire safety systems are being upgraded there, and this will have an impact on metro operations," Wallin said.

She said the exact timetable for the renovation is still being planned.

According to Antti Nousiainen, Director of the City Transport Asset Management Unit, metro traffic will be interrupted at the railway gate for 1.5 to 3 months.

"Metro trains will run eastbound from the University of Helsinki station and westbound from Kamppi metro station, but will not run to or through the railway station," Nousianen explained.

The reason for the renovation at the platform level of the metro station is to improve fire safety

"We have been working on this for several years in cooperation with the Helsinki Rescue Department. The original metro is 40 years old and the environment around the station has in many ways evolved over the years. The fire safety solutions chosen in the past no longer meet today's needs," Nousianen said.

HSL and Metropolitan Area Transport (HKL) have been preparing the repair project with the Helsinki City Rescue Department for a couple of years now, and it is planned to be completed by next summer.

The repair work and the resulting disruption of metro services are scheduled to take place from Midsummer to August.

"The timetable will be programmed so that the metro will run from Kaisaniemi to the east and from Kamppi to Kivenlahti," Nousianen.
