Finnish roads in much of the country will have winter speed limits by the end of next week, according to the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.

The agency's press release says that speed limits will be lowered next Thursday in most places, but individual regions can do so from Monday onwards if weather conditions demand it.

Most speed limits are 80 km/h on trunk roads and 100 km/h on motorways, a reduction of 20 km/h on limits in force during the warmer months.

According to the Road Safety Council, winter tyres should be used according to weather or driving conditions from 1 November until 31 March.

During this period studded tyres are permitted, and they may also be used outside the season if weather or road conditions call for their use.

Edited to clarify winter tyre use rules.
