A tram operating on the new light rail line between Helsinki and Espoo — which launched with much fanfare on Saturday — was involved in a collision with a car on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident, which comes just three days into the rail line's official service, occurred on Pitäjänmäentie in Helsinki when the tram hit the side of a passenger car.

No injuries were reported.

The Helsinki Regional Transport authority (HRT) confirmed the collision in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

"It was a minor fender bender. The police are on the scene investigating the situation," HRT spokesperson Juuso Peltonen told Yle.

The incident occurred just after 3pm on Tuesday afternoon, and services on the line were interrupted for a short period.

Tuesday's incident occurred very close to a similar collision between a tram and a passenger car, which happened during the new line's testing phase in September.

In addition, tram running on the same line derailed in September, also during the testing phase, hitting a post supporting overhead power lines in the Latokartano neighbourhood of Helsinki.

Edit note added at 13:38 on 25.10.2023 to add that a similar collision occurred in September.
