Yle to broadcast only in high-definition from 2025

The lengthy transition period is intended to help ensure viewers have enough time to prepare for the changeover.

The Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle's TV stations will be broadcast in high-definition only from spring 2025 onwards, as standard definition programming is being phased out.

The schedule for the change was decided at a meeting of Yle's administrative council on Tuesday, and will apply to both terrestrial and cable TV reception.

Other Finnish TV broadcasters will create their own schedule on the back of Yle's decision, with the industry hoping to reach a common agreement on switching over fully to high-definition broadcasts within a jointly agreed timeframe.

A significant proportion of households in Finland already have a HD-capable TV set, with HD content widely available. However, viewers who cannot currently access HD programming will be required to replace their receiving devices before the deadline of spring 2025.

Yle estimates that between 100,000 and 150,000 households across the country will need to obtain a new HD receiver.
