Travellers at the border were left frustrated on Friday after officials closed the frontier to traffic heading into Russia hours before the 8pm closure announced on Thursday.

Border guards at the Vaalimaa crossing said that they had to suspend travel from Finland to Russia due to the volume of asylum seekers arriving.

Ordinarily traffic changes direction regularly due to limited space, but on Friday Russian border officials were unwilling to cooperate to do this.

As a result the flow from Russia to Finland was continuous, forcing Finland's border guard to suspend traffic into Russia.

People waiting to cross, including many dual citizens and people with family divided by the frontier, told reporters they were frustrated to be unable to cross despite the advertised reopening.

Finland reopened the border on Thursday after a fortnight-long closure, before announcing a new closure when the flow of asylum seekers restarted.

A total of 208 asylum seekers arrived at the eastern border on Friday, adding to the 155 that arrived on Thursday.

The border is now scheduled to reopen in mid-January.

Officials and politicians in Finland say that the movements of people have been manipulated and used by Russia as a way to exert influence on its neighbour.
