Renowned Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki's hit movie Fallen Leaves has missed out on an Oscar nomination for best international feature.

The comedy-drama had made it onto the Academy Awards' shortlist alongside 14 other films, raising hopes that a feature-length Finnish film was finally about to receive an Oscar nomination.

However, Fallen Leaves was not among the five nominations in the best international feature category announced by actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid at a ceremony in Los Angeles at about 3:45pm Finnish time on Tuesday afternoon.

The five films nominated for the award were Io Capitano (Italy), Perfect Days (Japan), Society of the Snow (Spain), The Zone of Interest (UK) and The Teacher's Lounge (Germany).

Despite the Oscars setback, Fallen Leaves has enjoyed a great deal of success and praise from critics since its release, scooping up the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival as well as being nominated in five categories at the European Film Awards.

The film also received two Golden Globe nominations, one for best non-English language film and the other for the movie's co-star, Alma Pöysti, who was nominated for best female actor in a musical or comedy motion picture.

Fallen Leaves was also this year's most-watched film in Finnish cinemas and Time magazine named it the best movie of the year.

The only other Finnish feature film to have previously been nominated for an Academy Award was also directed by Kaurismäki, his 2002 feature The Man Without a Past.

The 2021 movie Compartment Number 6 by director Juho Kuosmanen was shortlisted for best international feature film at the 94th Academy Awards, but ultimately was not nominated.
