Approximately half of normal long-distance train traffic will run on Wednesday, State Railways VR has announced.

Night trains and railbuses will run as normal. However, some trains are cancelled and some are replaced by buses. Some local trains may also be affected.

VR cancelled train services on Tuesday for safety reasons due to track damage.

The Finnish Transport Infrastucture Agency has inspected more than 700km of track. The length of track which cause the damage that was initially observed on the wheels of the train stock, has been located between Lahti and Kouvola on the Mankala-Niinimäki track section. The damage has now been repaired and the track is safe for travel.

However the damaged track has extensively damaged train stock. More than 70 percent of the company's train fleet has travelled over the length of track in question.

Services will start up again as soon as the inspections of the fleet have been completed, VR says in a press release.

"We're aiming for Friday's ski holiday traffic to run as normally as possible," VR's long-distance transport director Piia Tyynilä says.

You can check the status of trains on VR's website. VR is also offering ticket refunds.
