Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen (NCP) on Thursday condemned violence against protesters in Georgia in a statement on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

Valtonen stated that violence against protesters is unacceptable and that the Georgian people have the right to protest the law on foreign influence.

On Monday, Georgian police fired water cannons, among other things, on demonstrators protesting the law in the capital Tbilisi.

Valtonen pointed out Georgia's intention of eventually joining the EU.

"Georgia was granted EU candidate status and we expect Georgia to stay on that path, which is the people’s choice," Valtonen said.

The Georgian bill has been denounced by critics as 'Russian-inspired' and the EU warned that it could hurt the Caucasus nation's desire of joining the organisation, the BBC reported.
