According to Statistics Finland, there were 41,000 more unemployed in April of this year than during the same month of 2023.

In addition to the 41,000 additional unemployed persons, year-on-year figures for last month showed that there were 17,000 fewer people who had jobs.

The trend of the employment rate in the 20-64 age group was 77.1 percent. The trend rate has been falling and was down from 78.4 percent in April of last year. Last month's unemployment rate trend was 8.2 percent for the 15-74 age group.

The number of employed men was approximately the same as in April 2023, but the number of employed women fell by 18,000.

For its part, the Ministry of Employment and the Economy reports that the number of unemployed jobseekers had risen by 29,200 since April of last year.

There were 114,500 job vacancies last month, or 55,900 fewer than a year ago.

Number of people 15 to 74 in the inactive population at just under 1.3 million was almost the same as in April 2023.

Statistics Finland points out that employment and unemployment vary considerably by month — and month-to-month changes mainly describe the seasonal aspect rather than the trend in development. For this reason, its statistical data are compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
