A long-distance coach crashed into the railing of a parking lot ramp in the centre of Helsinki on Thursday afternoon, but there were no reported injuries, according to police.

The front of the damaged double-decker OnniBus coach was seen hanging over the edge of the ramp after the collision.

The crash occurred at Eliel Square, on the western side of Helsinki Central Railway Station at around 3:15pm on Thursday.

OnniBus' commercial development director, Petteri Rantala, told news service STT that the accident appears to have been caused by a failure of the vehicle's brakes.

There were many people in the area who saw the accident, including 14-year-old Väinö Porttila, who was in town on a school outing with around 30 classmates.

"Suddenly we heard an awful sound. We saw a cloud of dust rise up as the bus went through the railing."

Porttila said that shards of glass flew onto some of her classmates, as they were standing around 10 metres away from where the coach crashed.

Yle spoke to three cab drivers who saw the collision from a nearby taxi rank. One of the drivers reported seeing the coach drive straight through a curve in the road and not turning. The driver suggested that there may have been a problem with the vehicle's brakes.

The taxi driver also described seeing about 20 people get out of the bus after the crash, adding that they did not seem to be injured but did appear to be panicked and in shock.

Another driver said the sound of the crash was so loud that he thought it had come from a construction site.

Bystanders made efforts to open the bus doors until emergency services arrived, shortly after the crash.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident, according to a press release.
