National rail carrier VR has announced plans to raise commuter ticket prices from next month.
The change means the fares for single, series and seasonal tickets will increase by an average of 60 cents, the company said in a statement released on Tuesday morning, but the actual price difference will depend on the route.
For example, the price of a single ticket on the Helsinki-Riihimäki line will rise from 11.10 euros to 11.50, while a single for the Riihimäki-Lahti route will now cost 6.90 euros, up from 6.60.
The price rises apply to the D, G, H, M, O, R, T and Z lines, and will come into effect on Monday 3 June at 9am.
Prices for discounted groups, such as students and pensioners, will remain unchanged, as will the fares for the Helsinki-Hyvinkää and Helsinki-Järvenpää routes.
VR said the price rise is being introduced because of increasing operating costs, with the firm's Director of Local Transport Anu Punola noting that the cost of electricity used by trains has risen by 30 percent since 2019.
"Season ticket prices for local services have not been increased since 2015. Our goal is to continue to increase the number of commuter passengers and keep fare changes moderate," Punola told Finnish news agency STT.
