Helsinki District Court has sentenced the former Managing Director of a Centre Party-linked housing foundation to six years in jail.
Aki Haaro was convicted of aggravated bribery in business, two counts of aggravated embezzlement, two counts of aggravated tax fraud and eight counts of aggravated forgery.
Haaro was found to have received more than 2.6 million euros in bribes from the Salpausselän Rakentajat construction firm while he was heading up the Youth Foundation, which aims to provide housing for 18-29-year-olds.
He was also found to have embezzled a total of more than six million euros from the foundation, and was ordered to pay compensation to the organisation.
In relation to the case, Estonian businessman Veljo Kuusk was also convicted of aggravated money laundering and sentenced to two and a half years in jail.
Pallas Rakennus Päijät-Häme and Fincap Pohjanmaa were ordered to pay corporate fines for aggravated bribery.
The Youth Foundation is a Centre Party-linked organisation set up to provide affordable housing for young people. The scandal around corruption in the foundation has been one of the biggest white-collar crime investigations in Finnish history.
