The Gulf of Finland Coast Guard responded to an unusual mission over Midsummer.

A patrol boat was called out to an island in the Gulf of Finland to transport a pregnant woman, who had been staying at a cottage, to the hospital.

The labour, however, began before the boat reached the mainland.

"By the time they got ashore, there was already a new person aboard," Coast Guard communications told Yle.

The Coast Guard did not provide further details or comment on whether their personnel assisted in the birth. Once ashore, the mother and baby were taken to the hospital. According to the Coast Guard, both were "doing well".

To safeguard the privacy of those involved, the Coast Guard has not disclosed the precise location or timing of the incident.

Coast Guard Master Sergeant Eero Söder said that while births on patrol boats are rare, they do happen.

"This has happened before over the years," he said.
