A court in Pirkanmaa has remanded into custody a 49-year-old man suspected of stealing 34 handguns from the Gun and Military Museum in Kuhmoinen, east of Tampere.

Police believe the theft occurred on Tuesday last week, and that there was a second attempt to break into the museum on Friday.

Yle understands the suspect in the case has a long criminal record, including for previous theft and firearms offences, and that he has confessed to the museum break-in to authorities. He will face charges including aggravated theft and an aggravated firearms offence.

The stolen weapons included Nagant revolvers, Lahti pistols and Colt handguns. Police said at the time that none of the guns were loaded with ammunition when they were stolen, but they could still be loaded and fired.

There are therefore concerns that the firearms could fall into the hands of criminals.

According to the latest information from police, one handgun has been recovered but the remaining 33 are still missing.
