Eva: Majority of Finns support Ukraine joining EU

Nearly 60 percent of respondents said it was likely that Ukraine's membership would mean an increase in EU contributions paid by other member states.

More than half of people in Finland would support Ukraine becoming a member of the European Union at some point in the future, according to the results of a survey commissioned by the economic think tank Finnish Business and Policy Forum (Eva).

However, the poll also found that nearly one in five people in Finland do not consider Ukraine suitable for EU membership.

In addition, 60 percent said it was likely that Ukraine's membership would mean an increase in EU contributions paid by other member states.

The issue of Ukraine's potential membership of the EU has been widely discussed in recent years, especially in the wake of Russia's full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022.

In an interview with Yle News last year, Finnish MEP Sirpa Pietikäinen said that Ukraine faces a "lengthy and tough road" towards EU membership.

"We have to remember that there are a huge amount of challenges in Ukraine. There's corruption. There's the economic situation. The country is at war. The democracy is very weak," Pietikäinen said.

Green Party MEP Ville Niinistö also noted the challenges Ukraine may face in meeting all the criteria required to join the EU, but added he would support Ukraine's accession.

"It's important that countries that want to join the EU are taken on board, that we show that these countries have a right to choose their own future and that Europe is supporting them, and we do not leave them at the mercy of Russia," Niinistö told Yle News.

Eva's value and attitudes survey canvassed the opinions of 2,087 randomly selected people.
