The Finnish government plans to introduce a blood alcohol limit for people driving e-scooters and other light electric vehicles.
The draft bill proposes placing a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) limit of 0.5 g/l on scooter drivers, which is the same alcohol limit for the nation's motorists. The limit would also apply to e-bicycles.
A 2022 study found that half of the drivers involved in e-scooter accidents in Helsinki were drunk at the time.
The government's proposal has been drafted and distributed to ministries and other organisations for comments and feedback.
Aside from introducing an alcohol limit, Yle understands that the government wants to further regulate the industry by requiring that scooter rental firms apply for an 'micromobility' licence from the local municipality in which they wish to operate.
This would give the municipality power to decide on how many rental scooters can be made available to customers in that area, for example.
Last year, around 30 cities and municipalities called for more powers to regulate e-scooter rental companies operating in Finland.
