Lidl supermarkets in Finland are changing how they price food products as they approach expiration dates, the company announced on Tuesday.

As the "use by" date on a food product approaches, the chain will offer a 20 percent discount, and then cut the price by 50 percent on the product's final expiry date.

The chain has offered 30 percent discounts on expiring food products, but closer to their expiration dates. Going forward, according to a press release, Lidl will discount such food items earlier.

According to Lidl Finland's sales organisation chief, Tuukka Turunen, the company wants to put the discount sales stickers on items in good time so they are still attractive to consumers.

"These 'red-labelled' products are very popular among our customers," Turunen said in the release.

The chain plans to continue selling day-old items, like in-store bakery products, at a discount. It will also still offer lower prices on blemished fruits and vegetables.

Lidl said that it donates fully expired products to food aid organisations and animal feed producers.
