A celebration marking the Hindu festival of Diwali will be held in Espoo's district of Leppävaara towards the end of this month.

Diwali — Festival of Lights will be held from noon until 8:30 pm on Sunday, 27 October, at the Sello Library and Hall, adjacent to the Sello shopping centre.

The event is being organised by the City of Espoo's cultural venues and services unit along with the Finnish-Indian Society (Suomi-Intia Seura).

The Hindu festival that celebrates the triumph of good over evil, which is widely celebrated in India, Nepal and some other parts of the world, is observed from mid-September to mid-November.

"In many ways, Diwali resembles Christmas: people clean and decorate their homes, light candles, give gifts, enjoy good food, and spend time with loved ones. The festival strongly embodies the joy of giving, positive emotions, and helping others. Diwali brings light into the darkness," a city press release explained.

Espoo's Diwali event will include cultural performances, games, workshops, a Diwali bazaar, food stalls, henna tattoos, a fire show as well as a concert by the Dhoad Gypsies of Rajasthan.

Except for the concert, admission to all of the event's activities is free of charge.

"You can even participate in the event before by joining in a lantern workshop, suitable for all ages where you can create your own colourful lantern," the release said.

Lantern workshops are being held across Espoo before the big day, according to organisers.
