A low pressure system bringing precipitation in the form of both rain and snow is headed towards Finland from the south-west, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).

Wednesday is expected to start off rainy and quite windy in southwestern areas, according to the forecast. During the day, the low pressure system is expected to move in a north-east direction.

The FMI has issued warnings for potentially dangerous winds across the entire country and for high winds at sea on Wednesday.

Once the system reaches Lapland, the precipitation will mainly fall in the form of snow, according to the forecast.

Winds could cause power outages

Winds will be strongest in eastern parts of Finland on Wednesday night, where gusts of up to 21 m/s are expected — conditions that could cause damage to property and trees.

On Wednesday, temperatures will be between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius in southern and central parts of the country, and around 0 to 10 degrees in the north, according to FMI on-duty meteorologist Hannu Valta.

Valta said that there is a possibility that the winds will develop into storm conditions in sea areas.

There is a risk that strong winds and heavy rain could cause damage, he said.

"Power outages are possible whenever there are such strong gusts of wind on land," Valta explained.

Thursday is also expected to be rainy, with precipitation possible in southern and central areas, and further north in the evening. Thursday will also be windy, but less so than on Wednesday.

Temperatures are expected to rise towards the end of the week, with the possibility of 15 degrees in the south on Thursday.

At sea, winds are expected to reach 17 to 19 m/s on Wednesday, the FMI said.

Most of the precipitation brought by the low pressure system is expected to be in the form of rain, but in northern areas it will likely be a wintry mix of snow and rain.

Areas with temperatures below the freezing point may receive ten centimetres of snowfall.

Winds are expected to gradually decrease in western areas on Wednesday night, as they head eastward.

However, conditions could get windy again on Friday, when the remnants of Hurricane Kirk are expected to reach Finland from the south-west.
