Finland's airport operator Finavia says it is expecting a busy autumn holiday season. Some 28,000 passengers a day are expected to depart from Finland's biggest airport during the school vacation period, which starts on Thursday 10 October and lasts a little over two weeks.

When arriving passengers are included, Helsinki Airport expects to handle around 50,000 people per day.

Helsinki and many parts of southern Finland start their school holidays on 14 October, with other regions taking their half-term break the following week.

The travelling peak is expected this week, according to Finavia, with 11 October and 12 October seeing the most passengers.

Passenger advice

Finavia says that the busiest times each day are between 5am and 8am and from 2pm until 6pm. Passengers are urged to check the guidance on baggage and liquids in advance.

In September the airport saw big queues when the EU changed the rules on scanners used to check liquids in hand baggage. Finavia said then that nearly half of all passengers were carrying liquids incorrectly in their hand luggage.

Carry-on luggage may only contain 100ml containers of liquids. Passengers can carry multiple containers of liquids, but the total volume of the smaller bottles cannot exceed two litres.

They do not need to be removed from luggage at security control. Finavia said on Thursday that power banks and sources of ignition should be packed in hand luggage, as they cannot be carried in the hold.

Finavia is piloting an online estimate of how long the queues are at security, which will be available on the company's website. It recommends following airlines' guidelines about how early to arrive for your flight.
