Last month was warmer than usual — and in some areas unusually warm — in Finland, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).

The month's average temperatures ranged from around the freezing point in Enotkiö in the far north, to about 10 degrees Celsius down south in the Finnish Archipelago.

Across all of Finland, October was 1-2.5 degrees warmer than the month's average during 1991-2020.

Many weather stations in the Gulf of Finland saw the warmest average temperatures for October in recorded history, according to the FMI.

The institute explained in a press statement that the developments in the sea region were due to warmer water temperatures, which measured around two degrees higher than the long-term average.

The highest recorded temperature in the country last month (15.9 degrees) was at the Kalbådagrund weather station in Porvoo, on the south coast, just east of Helsinki.

October's lowest temperature in Finland (-15.1 degrees) was recorded on the last day of the month (Thursday) at the Vuotso station in Lapland's municipality of Sodankylä.

The FMI issued a similar report about September, a month which saw temperatures exceeding 25 degrees for a record eight days. The agency reported that June, July and August were also warmer than usual.

However, the warmer conditions appear to have subsided, as much of the country is dealing with wind, rain, sleet, snow and colder temperatures this week.
