Police in Western Uusimaa are probing the death of a worker at Helsinki Airport early on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred at about 5 am when a Finnair aircraft was being moved to the airport's technical hangar for maintenance.

In a statement, police said the worker became trapped between the aircraft and a facilities vehicle, which is used to empty the toilets from planes.

On Monday morning, the Regional State Administrative Agency for Southern Finland (Avi) announced that it has also launched an investigation into the accident.

The person killed in the incident was an employee of Aviator Finland, a provider of passenger and ground services, the company's CEO Kimmo Holopainen confirmed to news agency STT. There were several workers involved in the transfer of the plane, which had just arrived from Tokyo, when the accident occurred, Holopainen noted.

The suspected offences under investigation by police include negligent homicide as well as endangerment of traffic safety, according to Detective Chief Inspector Kaisamaria Holappa, who is leading the investigation.

"We are now investigating if a mistake or negligence caused this to happen," Holappa said, but added that the probe is in its early stages, and the suspected offences may change during the course of the investigation.
