The Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle) is setting up a new team to combat disinformation.

The need for verifying information is constantly growing, as scams, disinformation, and even content threatening national security increasingly spread online, Yle said in a statement on Friday.

Much of this growth is due to the proliferation of artificial intelligence.

The number of deepfakes online is increasing rapidly, driven in part by advancements in artificial intelligence and generative AI tools that make their creation quick and inexpensive.

"Yle is committed to enhancing our journalists' ability to verify information and identify misinformation in all its forms," said Panu Pokkinen, editor-in-chief of Yle's News and Current Affairs division.

The new verification team will make use of both open-source and commercial information-gathering tools, integrating data from diverse sources, including social media images and videos.

In recent years, other public broadcasters, such as the BBC in the UK and SVT in Sweden, have created similar units. In Norway, media companies joined forces in 2017 to establish Faktisk.no, a fact-checking service.

Yle's verification team is bilingual, allowing for content creation in both Finnish and Swedish.

Earlier this week, Yle announced it was starting restructuring talks with 375 jobs on the line.
