Meteorologists are forecasting heavy snowstorms and strong winds for southern and central parts of the country midweek.

Inland areas of southern Finland will be the hardest hit and can expect up to 30 centimetres of snow over Wednesday and Thursday.

"There will be heavy snowfall and all of Finland will see some snow cover," said Yle meteorologist Elias Paakkanen.

On Monday, the mercury is dropping into subzero territory in most of the country, with the exception of the south where temperatures remain a few degrees above freezing.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has also issued a warning for slippery roads in central areas on Monday.

By Tuesday, the weather will turn colder, with temperatures dropping below freezing across nearly the entire country. Central and eastern parts of the country will also see light snow.

A snowstorm arriving from the south is expected to reach the southern parts of Finland by Wednesday afternoon. The front will move from south to north, bringing significant snowfall to southern areas and causing poor driving conditions.

Winds are meanwhile picking up on Thursday, when gusts may rise to 20 metres per second.
