Finland saw 14,200 calls to the 112 emergency number during New Year celebrations, according to the Emergency Response Centre Agency.

That is the number of calls between 6pm on 31 December and midnight on 1 January, and is up by around 1,000 on last year's figure.

Some 7,000 of those calls were passed on as callouts to different emergency services.

The centre told STT that a normal weekend day would see around 8,000 calls, if it was especially busy.
