Authorities are conducting technical examinations of an anchor recovered from the seabed as part of the investigation into cable damage in the Gulf of Finland.

The police aim to confirm whether the anchor belongs to the tanker Eagle S, which had been operating near the site of the incident.

The anchor was retrieved on Monday during a joint operation by various authorities.

Investigators are working to determine at what point the anchor detached from the vessel. The recovery site is close to where authorities had instructed the Eagle S to raise its anchor.

"If the anchor had detached during the lifting process, it is likely that it would have caused further damage to underwater infrastructure had the ship continued its journey," said Detective Superintendent Risto Lohi in a police statement.

On the deck of a snowy ship, a large rusty anchor has been hoisted over the euro poles. Around the anchor are people dressed in high visibility workwear.
