Stubb, Valtonen head to Munich Security Conference — PM Orpo stays away

The annual conference is regarded as a key forum for discussion of international security issues.

President Alexander Stubb and Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen (NCP) will represent Finland at the upcoming Munich Security Conference this weekend.

The attendee list was announced by the Office of the President on Tuesday.

Yle reported on Monday that Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) would not attend the conference.

Orpo has in recent months seemed content to leave several foreign and security policy events to Stubb.

The State Secretary Risto Artjoki, from the Office of the Prime Minister, told Yle on Monday that Finland had traditionally sent the president to the Munich conference.

"It's an advantage that Finland has two leaders who can represent the country abroad," said Artjoki.

PM Orpo is in Paris on Tuesday to attend the AI Action Summit, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The Munich Conference is a forum for leading politicians, foreign and security policy experts and researchers to meet. It describes itself as "world's leading forum for debating the most pressing challenges to international security".

Sanna Marin (SDP) attended the conference as Prime Minister in 2023 alongside then-President Sauli Niinistö and other ministers, and as an ex-PM in 2024.

Stubb books bilaterals

Stubb will participate in several events over the course of the weekend, as well as bilateral discussions.

On Friday he will join a panel discussion on strengthening Nato's easternmost members, while on Saturday he attends a discussion on changes in the world order.

On Sunday his agenda includes a panel discussion on Europe's security architecture.
