There are 48 occupations that do not have an adequate number of trained workers in Finland, according to this year's Occupational Barometer This year's figure increased from 32 fields in need of more skilled workers to fill jobs in 2017, while two years ago there were just 15 careers on the annual list.
This year, hearing specialists and speech therapists were the top professions stricken by a shortage of skilled workers, according to the barometer published by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment on Wednesday.
The fields with the highest number of open vacancies are the construction and healthcare industries. Conversely, there are more secretaries in Finland than there are jobs.
Worker shortage and oversupply list
Throughout Finland, the most sought-after professionals are hearing specialists and speech therapists, construction workers, construction engineers, nurses and healthcare workers, social workers, daycare teachers, senior physicians and specialist doctors, sales representatives, general practitioners as well as dentists.
On the other side of the coin, there is currently an oversupply of general secretaries, tailors, dressmakers, furriers, hat makers, departmental and management secretaries, graphic and multimedia designers, advertising and marketing specialists, furniture carpenters, IT installers and repairers, joiner machinists and journalists.
