Local hamburger chain Hesburger has requested police to investigate reports that needles were in French fries served by one of its restaurants in Lahti.

According to tabloid Iltalehti (in Finnish), a family found three sewing needles stuck inside French fries purchased on Monday. Nobody was hurt.

"We ensure the quality and safety of our products in many different ways. For example, all French fries we sell pass through metal detectors in the factory," said Communications Manager Heini Santos from Hesburger.

"Our probe shows that the needles were put in the food after they were sold," Santos added.

She said Hesburger considered the incident very serious and unfortunate and that the company had been in contact with the customer for additional information.

Earlier in January, a needle was found inside a clementine in a western Finnish supermarket.
