The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) recommended on Thursday that people in Finland should avoid travelling to Russia due to the sharply deteriorating coronavirus situation in the country.

The health agency added that there are particular concerns over the highly-contagious Delta variant.

Almost 400 coronavirus infections have now been linked to football fans returning to Finland after watching the Finnish football team play Belgium in the Euro2020 championship finals in the Russian city of St. Petersburg on 21 June.

Travellers arriving into Finland from Russia must undergo coronavirus tests at the border, and they are instructed to take the test again 72 hours after arriving in Finland.

THL further recommends that they self-quarantine while waiting for their test results.
