Chief Executive Officer of the Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District (HUS), Juha Tuominen, has announced that will be retiring from 1 August on the grounds of disability.

Tuominen has been suffering from asymptomatic multiple sclerosis for decades. He has been on sick leave since 5 July on the recommendation of doctors after developing symptoms of the disease.

The senior physician was elected CEO of HUS in August 2018. He was previously employed by private healthcare provider Terveystalo, as a chief physician and a member of the management team.

For the time being, Tuominen's duties will be covered by Markku Mäkijärvi, HUS Chief Medical Officer.

The hospital district's Board of Directors will elect a new CEO on 16 August.
