Shipbuilding firm Meyer Group, which has a shipyard in Southwest Finland, plans to expand its product range to include luxury mega yachts.
The Germany-based company made the announcement at the Monaco Yacht Show on Thursday as it unveiled the 150-metre-long ONE 50, a mega yacht powered by fuel cells and batteries.
Able to reach a maximum speed of 23 knots, the ONE 50 will have six decks and accommodate up to 44 guests. The yachts will also be outfitted with a spa, cinema and entertainment areas.
The company said the yachts could be built at all three of its shipyards, including Turku as well as Papenburg and Rostock, Germany. The company said demand for mega yachts is expected to grow in coming years.
Most of the ships built at the Meyer shipyard in Turku have been gigantic cruise ships that are able to carry thousands of passengers, but the Covid crisis caused a major slowdown to the cruise industry.
In August 2020, citing a slowdown due to the crisis, Meyer confirmed it would lay off 166 workers at its facility in Turku.
In August of this year the company announced it had signed a letter of intent to construct multi-purpose vessels for the Finnish Border Guard.
