Finland is preparing to close its airspace to Russian air traffic in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka (SDP) tweeted the announcement on Saturday evening. The government has yet to announce a formal decision on the measure.
Russian countermeasures could severely impact national carrier Finnair, effectively closing Asian routes, according to the airline's spokesperson, Satu Haataja. Flying around Russia would significantly increase flight durations to Asia, where Finnair services ten destinations.
Finland's move to block Russian planes follows similar bans by many other European countries. In addition to passenger traffic, the action is also likely to impact cargo shipments.
