A strike planned by nurses' unions Tehy and the Finnish Union of Practical Nurses (SuPer) will be pushed back by two weeks, according to Turku daily Turun Sanomat.

The paper has reportedly received confirmation about the delay from both union and employer representatives.

According to Turun Sanomat, employer organisation KT has proposed that the strike, which was scheduled to begin on 18 March, be postponed until early April to allow more time for negotiations.

Tehy and SuPer issued a strike warning to six hospital districts across Finland last week.

The unions said they took the step in response to employer representatives' failure to adequately tackle the looming crisis in Finland's social and healthcare sector brought on by an acute shortage of staff.

The strike would include about 25,000 employees nationwide and last for two weeks. In addition to the hospital districts, it would also apply to any firms or cooperatives owned by or closely associated with the districts.
