Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, are meeting in Paris on Monday

Discussions at Macron's official residence will focus on Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the European security environment, according to Niinistö's office.

Finland's leadership has attended several high level international meetings since the Ukraine war began.

Talks in Paris on Monday were the latest diplomatic efforts to find a resolution to the conflict. US President Joe Biden was also scheduled to speak with Macron by telephone on Monday, according to the White House. The call is to also include German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian premier Mario Draghi and Prime Minister Boris Johnson of the United Kingdom.

Niinistö's visit is also set to involve one-on-one meetings, according to his office, which did not reveal further details.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has prompted heated discussion about the possibility of Finland joining Nato. At the moment it is a partner of the military alliance, not a full member.

In an interview published by the Financial Times on Sunday, Niinistö suggested that deeper defence co-operation with the United States and Sweden might be an alternative to Finland joining Nato.
