President Sauli Niinistö has been taken to hospital for monitoring due to prolonged coronavirus symptoms, his office has announced in an official statement.
Despite the symptoms, the press release added that Niinistö is "feeling reasonably well and is continuing to work remotely".
Due to the infection, his planned visit to Norway which had been due to take place on 21 and 22 April was postponed. His upcoming engagements include a state visit to Sweden on 17 and 18 May.
According to Finland's constitution, the President's duties will be performed by the Prime Minister in the event that the President is unable to do so.
President to miss Veterans' Day event
Earlier on Tuesday, Niinistö announced via a Facebook post that he will not attend the main Veterans' Day commemoration event this year after testing positive for Covid last week.
National Veterans' Day is a remembrance day for all of Finland's war veterans, and is celebrated every year on 27 April — the date Finnish troops completed operations against Germany in Lapland in 1945.
This marked the end of Finland's involvement in World War II.
In the post, Niinistö wrote that he has been present at all Veterans' Day events throughout his presidency, but must miss this year's due to health guidelines.
"I wish you all a good National Veterans' Day in advance," he added.
Veterans' Day was first celebrated in 1987, as part of the year marking Finland's 70th anniversary of independence.
