Writeblr Intro

Hello! I’m Anya. She/her, English major, queer WOC. I’m not new to tumblr but this account sure is! I’ve lurked on writeblr (and general tumblr) for a bit and my original account went from a budding writeblr to a general account so I’m here to try again, lol. I’d love to make some writing friends, so if you’re interested I’d be happy to hear it!

I predominantly write fantasy, though I like to dabble in a bit of everything because I don’t understand restraint lmao. You’ll never see me write realistic fiction though. I’m simply incapable. All of my writing must have some level of magic/supernatural elements in it, or it’s not mine! I’ve been trying to get back into reading and writing more consistently, and actually WRITING instead of just thinking about writing or obsessively outlining and planning.

I tend to bounce around on WIPs so I have way too many. But my main focus at the moment is Traveling Bards (working title), a portal fantasy/isekai comedy about three sisters causing chaos in a fantasy medieval kingdom. I’ll be posting a dedicated intro post to that and other WIPs soon so please follow or just check in on my blog if you’re interested!

Would love to have some fellow writing buddies, whether that’s for motivation, sharing advice, critiques, or just commiserating together!

Steps to Write a Cunning Femme Fatale

image

1. Establish Her Persona

  • Define Her Allure: Craft her as enigmatic, charming, and intelligent. She should draw people in with her charisma and mystique.
  • Give Her Depth: Avoid clichés by giving her a unique backstory, motivations, or vulnerabilities that shape her actions.
  • Choose Her Strengths: Highlight skills like manipulation, resourcefulness, or combat abilities that give her an edge.

2. Shape Her Role in the Plot

  • Decide Her Purpose: Determine if she’s an ally, antagonist, or morally gray character, and how her actions drive the story.
  • Design Power Dynamics: Show how she wields control or influence over other characters, often exploiting weaknesses.
  • Weave Intrigue: Keep her intentions ambiguous to maintain tension and mystery.

3. Build Her Relationships

  • Contrast With Others: Develop relationships that show how she contrasts with or complements other characters (e.g., a vulnerable hero or a rival villain).
  • Show Complexity: Explore the layers in her interactions, such as her ability to mix truth with deception.
  • Reveal Gradually: Unfold her true nature over time, leaving both characters and the audience guessing.

4. Create a Striking Appearance

  • Use Symbolism: Incorporate elements of her look that reflect her personality, like bold colors, sleek outfits, or unique accessories.
  • Convey Confidence: Show her self-assuredness in the way she moves, speaks, and holds herself.
  • Highlight Ambiguity: Blend qualities that make her both alluring and dangerous (e.g., a soft smile hiding sharp intent).

5. Show Her in Action

  • Establish Power Plays: Showcase her intelligence and cunning through strategic actions, manipulations, or daring risks.
  • Create High Stakes: Put her in situations where she must outwit others or face consequences.
  • Balance Strength and Vulnerability: Let her excel in some areas while occasionally exposing a flaw or fear to humanize her.

6. Develop a Satisfying Arc

  • Choose Her Outcome: Decide if she triumphs, meets her downfall, or remains ambiguous at the story’s end.
  • Reflect Growth or Decline: Show how her actions shape her destiny—whether she evolves, succumbs, or holds her ground.
  • Tie Back to Themes: Ensure her arc aligns with the overarching themes of the story, like betrayal, love, or revenge.

Examples of Femme Fatales in Stories

1. Film Examples

  • Phyllis Dietrichson (Double Indemnity): Uses charm and manipulation to pull others into her schemes, embodying the classic femme fatale archetype.
  • Mal Cobb (Inception): A tragic yet dangerous figure, her motivations blur the lines between reality and illusion.
  • Nikita (La Femme Nikita): Balances vulnerability and lethal skill, creating a layered and compelling character.

2. Literature Examples

  • Catherine Tramell (Basic Instinct): A brilliant, enigmatic writer whose intelligence and seduction make her a master manipulator.
  • Milady de Winter (The Three Musketeers): A cunning and ruthless antagonist, she uses her wits and charm to outmaneuver the heroes.
  • Amy Dunne (Gone Girl): Subverts the idea of victimhood with her calculated and chilling actions, redefining the femme fatale for modern audiences.

Idgaf if you don't want to write essays for school. I don't care if you don't want to write corporate emails yourself. I don't care if you can't draw well, I don't care if you can't write well, I don't care if you just really really want to talk to your favorite fictional character but don't want to RP with a real person because you have social anxiety or whatever

If you're still regularly using generative ai, chatgpt or midjourney or character.ai or literally whatever the fuck, im personally blaming you when my utility prices start going up.

jay-wasreblogging

Why would utility prices go up because of ai?

(I am not defending the usage of generative AI/ChatGPT/Character.ai etc etc i am very much against it - I am just curious as to the correlation between using it and utility price surge please don't come at me this is a genuine question)

raddagher

Happy to help.

ChatGPT uses so much energy that the US is literally reversing course on coal and gas usage to make up for it. In Santa Clara, for example, data centers used 60% of the ENTIRE CITY'S electricity.

ChatGPT uses 1-3 bottles of water for cooling for every query you put into it. This is FRESH WATER, which is evaporated and eventually mostly returns to the ocean, effectively removing a lot of it from our already dwindling fresh water supply on the planet. It also consumes 17 THOUSAND TIMES more electricity than the average American home.

The AI boom wastes so much electricity that we are very immediately risking US cities having to have rolling blackouts just to keep up with the energy demands, as early as NEXT YEAR

Gen AI's water usage is projected to hit 6.6 BILLION meters cubed by 2027

More AI use = more data centers = power drain on local cities = gas, electricity, and water utility prices rise because all of our resources are being funneled into a machine that makes garbage

knitmeapony

To be clear, these data centers aren't exclusively ai. In general, we need to do a hell of a lot better with how we manage and maintain our online infrastructure. But generative AI sure as hell isn't helping.

Potential Fantasy Jobs!

If you don't want to use the same stereotypical Generic Fantasy Land jobs to center your stories around, stay here!

A) Ritual Salter-And-Burner

The country that this character lives in is highly rituatlistic about how to pay proper ceremony to the dead as it is believed that if these steps aren't performed then the dead will be forced to stay on Earth and won't be able to complete the cycle.

However, what if a person dies in rather hard-to-reach place such as the tallest mountains that are almost entirely uninhabitable? Or in a different country? Or isn't strictly dead but "missing"? Or is stuck in something a bit more private than a military/boarding school?

That's were Salt-Burners come in! While there are different types of Salters, the entire occupation is about finding and performing the proper rites and rituals that, for some reason, the typical workers can't.

There are Salt-Burners who specialize in specific, hard-to-traverse places such as the mountains or caves.

There are Salt-Burners who specialize in fighting the legal battles where family members may not be able to.

There are Salt-Burners who specialize in finding not-comfirmed dead bodies such as in cases of missing people or people whose bodies weren't found. This can be through investigation, spying, and/or surviellance

memecucker

if you’re white and wanna write a poc character and feel awkward about it i implore you to ignore any twitblr stuff treating it as a massive ethical burden and instead come in more with the same mindset you’d have if you wanted to write about idk firefighters but didn’t know anything about firefighters so you do... research. Like fuck off with the weird kinda creepy calls for spiritual introspection you’re not writing about god damn space aliens you’re writing about humans and if you think you need more perspective of different life experiences just read?

dehautdesert

If I were writing about firefighters I'd also, in addition to just reading about them, take advantage of Our Blessed Internet to ask actual firefighters about how shit works. I'd do the same for a minority I'm not a part of.

I remember when there was this LiveJournal community where you could just ask about anything you needed for your novel - medicine, professions, vehicles, how things function in country X - and people who knew something about that would answer.

We need to bring this back.

dehautdesert

And apparently just this summer they DID bring it back - it's called Little Details and it's on Dreamwidth!!!!

crazy-pages

Remember, a world where everyone stays in their own boxes and only writes about their own narrow demographic is straight up a goal for racists. If you ever find yourself attempting anti-racism so hard you've looped back to "functionally the same thing racists want", stop, take stock, and ask yourself where things went wrong.

Me after seeing certain recent events in US news, glancing nervously back at my Robin Hood-style serial killer OC from the WIP I’ve been working on for years: 👁️👄👁️

I gotta stay high all the time

To keep you off my mind, ooh, ooh

High all the time

To keep you off my mind, ooh, ooh

Spend my days locked in a haze

Tryna forget you

When the tears are rolling down

Like a river to the ocean

And there's no one else around

You won't question my devotion

Everybody needs somebody

And you got me

You know that I know that you know that

I'll be there for the highs and lows

Give you mine if your heart gets broke

By your side, when you're all alone

I will be there

When you're down, d-down on your luck

No ride home and you got too drunk

Two A.M. I'mma pick you up

I will be there, ay

I wish that I had somebody to call when I am not okay

I wish that I had anyone who cared when I am in that place

I wish I could have a mental breakdown

Without turning my life into a ghost town

So many things I would change

But more than anything

I wish somebody loved me as much as I hate myself

I wish somebody listened as much as I go through hell

He was doing lines or something in the bathroom

I barely recognized him at all

I saw him doing things you shouldn't do with all that power

I wish someone would have thrown him in the shower

I barely recognized him at all

That night I put my youth in a casket

And buried it inside of me

That night I saw through all the magic

Now I'm a witness to the death of a hero

I burned all the pictures in the attic

And threw away the magazines

That night I saw through all the magic

And now I'm a witness to the death of a hero

I tried to look away but you can't look away from a trainwreck

You never heard of me

Or the weird shit I do and say

That's my favorite thing

That I'm not famous, no

And I'm never on TV

Throwing up on an LA street

Nobody judges me

Cause I'm not famous, no

Paparazzi is at an all time low

Paparazzi they don't care where I go

Ramblers in the wilderness

We can't find what we need

We get a little restless from the searching

Get a little worn down in between

Like a bull chasing the matador

Is the man left to his own schemes

Everybody needs someone beside 'em

Shining like a lighthouse from the sea

Brother, let me be your shelter

Never leave you all alone

I can be the one you call

When you're low

Brother, let me be your fortress

When the night winds are driving on

Be the one to light the way

Bring you home

  1. Nightmare - Avenged Sevenfold

Now your nightmare comes to life

Dragged you down below, down to the devil's show

To be his guest forever (peace of mind is less than never)

Hate to twist your mind, but God ain't on your side

An old acquaintance severed (burn the world your last endeavor)

Flesh is burning, you can smell it in the air

'Cause men like you have such an easy soul to steal (steal)

So stand in line while they ink numbers in your head

You're now a slave until the end of time here

Nothing stops the madness turning

Haunting, yearning, pull the trigger

2. Another Way Out - Hollywood Undead

I wish there was another way out

Voices won't go away, they stay for days and days

They say some awful things, ways to make you fade away

I don't think no one's home and we're just here alone

I better find you first before you find the phone

Better run, better run, better run, yeah, I'm coming after you

When you're sleeping at night, yeah, there's nothing you can do

There's no place you can hide 'cause I'm coming after you

I wish there was another way out for you

Wish there was another way out for you

I wish there was another way out

3. So Cold - Ben Cocks, Nikisha Reyes-Pile

Oh, you can't hear me cry

See my dreams all die

From where you're standing

On your own

It's so quiet here

And I feel so cold

This house no longer

Feels like home

[...]

You caused my heart to bleed and

You still owe me a reason

'Cause I can't figure out why

Why I'm alone and freezin'

While you're in the bed that she's in

And I'm just left alone to cry
