But back to the #gold #top: the wraparound models from ‘53/'54 are my absolute favourite #LPs. The guys at #CapsuleMusic (or, more accurately, the Guy at CapsuleMusic ;) let me pick it up and it was astonishingly light weight. I have #Stratocasters heavier than this #LP. No more than 7.5 lbs I estimate. Wow. Magical.

I still think that Gibson’s original #goldtop finish is one of the best finishes of all time. It is so rich and ages just beautifully. Although I am getting more and more interested in #bursts thanks to @rpcc2, my ultimate #LP would still be a ‘54 #gold #top. I just love that #wraparound!

It’s going to be a #LesPaul kind of day around here…the sun is not up yet, but I am hoping to take some better shots of my friend Peter’s #Heritage #H150 with the Gibson-ized headstock today to show you guys!

Here’s a wall of #Telecasters at The #TwelfthFret in #Toronto, Canada. The #butterscotchblonde on the left is a #Fender #CustomShop #Nocaster, and the #blonde on the right is (I believe…) a 1968 or ‘69 with factory #Bigsby. But my absolute favourite in this shot is the #gold #paisley #Relic, Master-built by @dwilson_fender. Man, that’s a beautiful finish!

PS: because I kinda failed to post anything for #Straturday this week, I left the blonde #EricJohnson Stratocaster in the shot rather than cropping it out to concentrate 100% on the #Tele goodness! :D

Some more from Thursday Guitar Shopping in the Toronto area last week.  These were seen at the Long & McQuade store in Brampton, Ontario, Canada:

  1. Do you know why Leo Fender gave the Stratocaster 3 pickups?  He was designing a guitar to compete with the Gibson Les Paul, released in 1952.  The Les Paul had two pickups (P-90s at the time…of course by ‘57 they had changed to the legendary PAFs), so Leo gave the Strat 3 pickups.  It was kind of a “But these go to 11” moment in guitar history!
  2. SG Deluxe.  Note: three pickups.  See #1 above…  :D
  3. Now THAT is a pretty top!
  4. And so is that!
  5. See point #1 re: PAFs.  My guess is the gold top om the left is a reissue of a '57.  If it were a '56 it would have the TOM, but P-90s.  If a '55 it would have P-90s and a wraparound.  the P-90s/wraparound gold top is my fave Les Paul.  I wouldn’t even care if it was 10 lbs.  Well, 9 lbs anyway… :D
  6. Epiphone Wildkat, IMO one of the best values in the budget guitar range.  Epi Nighthawk too.  Epi 339.  Epi Casino Coupe.  All good.
  7. I’m at a point now where there are so many variations on the Stratocaster that I can’t tell what anything is other than an American Standard, American Deluxe or the variaous AVRI models.  I THINK this is a (used) American Special…but don’t quote me on that!
  8. Another FSR from the 60th Anniversary range.  I’m not big on gold hardware, but I like it here.

It was the best of knobs, it was the worst of knobs, it was the age of wise knobs, it was the age of foolish knobs, it was the epoch of belief in knobs, it was the epoch of incredulity about knobs, it was the season of light knobs, it was the season of dark knobs, it was the spring of knobs, it was the winter of knobs, we had every knob before us, we had no knobs before us, we were all going direct to knob-Heaven, we were all going direct the other way (i.e. to knob-Hell) - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest knob authorities insisted on its being received, for good knobs or for evil knobs, in the superlative degree of knob comparison only.

And here’s (probably) the last guitar I will (probably) sell to help pay for the new (old) ES-355:  it’s a circa-2005 Fender Custom Shop ‘67 Telecaster Relic in shoreline gold.  Shoreline isn’t flashy like Surf Green or Dakota.  It’s subtle, and understated.  It’s the thinking-person’s custom colour!  :D

These were an exclusive run for Sam Ash (there was this “Bullion gold” model and another model in Pelham blue), and since there are no Sam Ash stores north of the border, I can only assume this one must be an illegal immigrant to Canada!  I keep demanding to see its work permit, but it just sits there, smugly gleaming at me!  And then it launches into Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song”!   The NERVE!
