Thanks is the personal instrument of the owner of @folkwaymusic. That weird handle thingy over the bridge and attached to the #tailpiece is a vibrato system! I can almost guarantee you’ll never see another one of these. Ever!

#GibSunday phun with #Photoshop.

Here are two shots of that fun, inexpensive, 1961 #Gibson #MelodyMaker I posted a couple of weeks ago from the #Elmira #GuitarShow, now “back in the shop” and available at @folkwaymusic in #Waterloo Canada.

At some point in its history, a misguided soul installed a stop #tailpiece, which has since been removed, leaving those gaping holes visible in the top (left photo). Other than these eyesores the #guitar is in great condition though and I’d love to add it to my collection.

But I just can’t look past these goddam holes! They draw my eyes in like a magnet! So I decided I would use Photoshop for good instead of evil (for a change) and see what the guitar would look like if it had never been modded. And so I removed the holes through modern computer trickery! 😁

But the guitar does look great in it’s pre-modded state though doesn’t it?

I have been playing this #guitar exclusively for the last few days. 1966 #Gretsch #6120. It needs new #frets, but even with worn frets it still feels great with nice low action and a very full rich sound. And that orange finish…

Opinions required: I saw this #B&G #LittleSisterCrossroads model yesterday at @folkwaymusic.

This model is an Asian-made lower-priced version of the B&G #LittleSister #PrivateBuild. Like it’s big Sister, the #Crossroads boasts a solid brass #tailpiece and #pickup covers (#P90s BTW), solid maple top, chambered body, spoke wheel nut trussrod, one piece African #mahagony neck with an Indian #rosewood #fretboard, #Tusq nut, and a lovely slotted #headstock with #GoldenAge #Restoration tuners. It comes with a cutaway or non-cutaway body.

The B&G website says the MSRP on this model is $1450 USD which does not seem unreasonable…if I was in the United States, that is! But I’m not. $1450 US works out to $1950 CAD. Add on the sales tax and I’m looking at ~$2200 CAD for a made-in-China #guitar. Seems a bit steep to me.

However, there is just something about this guitar. I love the design.

Tonight’s project: put the original #wraparound compensated #tailpiece back on the ‘62 #Gibson #SG Special.

I had been using a modern repro bridge with proper compensation for a plain G, but in the end it didn’t make the tuning *that* much better and every time I looked at this #guitar I knew we were just living a lie together. Original parts ftw! 😄😅😆

How about “#McKayMonday”?

Here is a beautiful and fascinating #guitar - a #McKay Duo Flo spotted at @tgscan in #Toronto, Canada. The web description says it is a blend of a #LesPaul and #ES335 with a smattering of #ES175 thrown in. It’s called #DuoFlo thanks to the dual #Florentine #cutaways (clever, eh?😁), and features #PAF-style #SeymourDuncan #Antiquity #humbuckers with #vintage-style wiring, aged gold hardware, lightweight aluminium stop #tailpiece and Tune-O-Matic, and “autumn burst” aged patina #nitrocellulose #lacquer finish.

It’s a beautiful guitar - bigger than an #ES339 but smaller than a 335, and weighs under 8 lbs. What I especially like is that it’s not just an exact copy of a a single #gibsonguitar. It’s got its own thing goin’ on. Just be careful of those #florentinecutaways: it’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye! 😄😅😆

Next up for “What the Flying F*ck is That?!? Friday” is a very unusual and groovy #Magnetone #MarkIV from 1957, spotted at The #TwelfthFret in #Toronto, Canada.

The 12th Fret says this #guitar was made by one of the top (at the time) #amp companies, Magnatone, and is based on designs by Paul #Bigsby (yes, the #vibrato guy, and the guy from whom it is alleged that Leo #Fender semi-plagiarized the #Stratocaster #headstock!). It looks like a #solidbody but it’s actually #semihollow, and it’s all original, with #Kluson #tuners and an aluminum (“aluminium” to the British kids tuning in this evening…) nut. The Mark IV model had a #trapeze #tailpiece, while the #MarkVI had a Bigsby. So there you go!

You know I have a thing for small #guitars right? Here’s one of the smallest and funnest: 1959 #Gibson #ES140 ¾ T.

Before ‘58 these things were full depth (i.e. not “T”) making them like a miniature, unbound, #ES175! With dot markers. And a plain #trapeze #tailpiece. And and unbound #fretboard. OK…more like a miniature full depth #ES125.

Not #vintage. And perhaps more importantly, not an #SG! 😂

But this 2009 #Gibson #Custom ‘60 #LesPaul Special #TV #VOS is one of my best playing #guitars. And interestingly, despite the non-compensated #wraparound #tailpiece, has absolutely perfect #intonation. It also the best-looking back-of-a-headstock of any of my guitars, with the *possible* exception of the #ES355 and its super groovy “waffle” #tuners.

“Favourite back of a headstock” is a thing, right?? 😂

Here’s something fun and rare I spotted whilst #guitarshopping yesterday: 1972 #Gibson #ES325 TDC.

The 325 is an oddball…my cousin has a #walnut one from ‘73 or '74…and he says it was one of those models #guitar companies come up with to use up old parts. The 325 has #minihumbuckers and unlike pretty much every other 33x model, a control plate that the #electronics are mounted to, i.e. if you need to change a #pot you don’t have to go in through an #Fhole. And that’s a good thing because the 325 only had one f hole!

This one also had black binding, a fancier #tailpiece, embossed #pickup covers and that groovy '70s “harmonica” #bridge. Selling for just under $3k CAD at the #TwelfthFret in #Toronto.

And here is the second #vintage #guitar I ever bought - a 1968 #Gibson #SG Special

A prior owner had mangled it by converting it to a #stop #tailpiece and Tune-O-Matic and #Grover tuners. It has be converted back to the original configuration with the short #Maestro Vibrola and “lightning bolt” #compensatedbridge, but you can see the plugs where the stop tail used to be. The plugs for the bridge (a Tune-O-Matic is narrower than the studs for the #LightningBolt, so more plugging and drilling were required!) are mercifully hidden beneath the #pickguard!

Thankfully, the prior owner left the original #P90 #pickups and #wiringharness intact. I guess he/she was not a *complete* imbecile. Only a partial imbecile… 😂

Here’s one from the ol’ #guitarcollection that doesn’t get a lot of noise but is a truly great and rare instrument: it’s a 2009 #Epiphone 1962 #Wilshire #USA #Reissue. Only 100 of these were built (by the #Gibson #CustomShop in #Nashville), 50 in #vintage #cherry and 50 in #AlpineWhite. It’s super light at roughly 6 lbs, and plays incredibly well.

I looked for one of these for 3 long years, and finally ended up finding this one at @rumbleseatmusic in #Ithaca, #NY in late 2014, on my way home from a guitar shopping mini-trip to #NewYorkCity. One day I’d love to add a #vintage early ‘60s #Coronet (the single #P90 & #wraparound #tailpiece version of this guitar) to the collection…

So I removed the weird, but original, #Maestro #Vibrola #tailpiece from the ‘61 Les Paul SG Junior, because I could not figure it out! People kept saying “just #topwrap it!” but since the #strings loaded from the back instead of the front (as they do on other models of this #vibrato system), it was not possible to top wrap. so I wimped out and made it back into a #hardtail. HOWEVER, rather than going back to the plain #wraparound - or the original “#lighningbolt” #compensated #bridge (which is compensated for a #wound G string) - I installed this modern take on the #compensated wraparound. Very subtle, isn’t it? Unless you look closely you don’t even notice it’s not a regular, uncompensated wraparound!

This actually does improve the #intonation over the plain wraparound. Although the plain wraparound is quite good, I found the G (that pesky g string again!) was not close enough and would bother my ear whenever playing above about the 10th fret. On my 2009 #LesPaul #Special, the plain wraparound has PERFECT intonation - as good as a bridge with adjustable #saddles. Not sure why that would be different on this guitar…but it is!
