You had me at Grover…
One of the most interesting features on the 1969 Fender Coronado, are these super fancy Grover F tuners. I was not even aware they existed until I started researching Coronados in preparation for this purchase. At first I thought they were replacements they looked so *wrong*! 😂
My buddy @theiceplant asked for “#tuning pegs” as the next stop on this #MacroMonday world tour. So I whipped up this photo of my 1959 #Gibson #ES140 ¾ T.
I love the old #Kluson “plate” #tuners…and I am SO glad the former owner(s) of this #guitar did not swap them out for #Grover tuners as so many others did back in the day. They work just fine, so don’t let any slick-talking tuner salesperson fool you into swapping yours out! 😁

And here is the second #vintage #guitar I ever bought - a 1968 #Gibson #SG Special
A prior owner had mangled it by converting it to a #stop #tailpiece and Tune-O-Matic and #Grover tuners. It has be converted back to the original configuration with the short #Maestro Vibrola and “lightning bolt” #compensatedbridge, but you can see the plugs where the stop tail used to be. The plugs for the bridge (a Tune-O-Matic is narrower than the studs for the #LightningBolt, so more plugging and drilling were required!) are mercifully hidden beneath the #pickguard!
Thankfully, the prior owner left the original #P90 #pickups and #wiringharness intact. I guess he/she was not a *complete* imbecile. Only a partial imbecile… 😂

Restoring the ‘68 SG Special Part 1:
I received my adapter bushings from Stew-Mac and I am in the process of removing the retrofitted Grover tuners and replacing them with a set of vintage Kluson plate tuners I picked up at Capsule Music in Toronto. Next step: get rid of the Tune-O-Matic and install the reproduction bridge!

A quick couple of shots for first thing on a Sunday morning! When I bought my 1968 SG Special, I knew the knobs were not original. So I ordered a set of repros from eBay and they came in on Friday! Now my ‘68 SG has '68-style “witch hat” knobs, and all is right with the world again! :D
Next step: install the vintage “strip” Kluson tuners I bought…a luthier will do this job for me because it involves filling the holes made for the after-market Grovers, and re-drilling the original holes for the Klusons…and I do not trust myself to do a proper job! :D

I LOVE the PRS Starla. Here is one I shot at Cosmo Music in Richmond Hill, Ontario, (Canada) on November 27th.
Actually, I just got myself a new Starla…a special order from PRS. I asked them to build it with a stop-bar instead of a Bigsby. It arrived 1 week ago…and I have been playing all week!
Of course this means I now have two Starlas. The “new” hard tail, and my original one in frost blue metallic (with Bigsby). Technically I do not need “two” Starlas…so I am seeling the blue one. If you live in the Greater Toronto Area and wanna come by and test her out, let me know…I’ll make a special deal for Tumblr friends! :D
