Silent Night by Michael James Adams

Here’s a closer shot of the #headstock that changed my opinion of #CBS era #Strat #headstocks. After a lengthy discussion 2 posts ago with @zwilkerson and @hinosol in which I think we all agreed that despite some real or perceived manufacturing Q.A. deficiencies at Fender under the new management…especially after Stratocaster demand went through the roof thanks to #Hendrix’s appearance at #Woodstock with his (now legendary) #OlympicWhite #mapleneck '68, we all love this headstock!

PS: not to start yet ANOTHER lengthy discussion, but I am sure I read somewhere that CBS switched to the big headstock in '66 (and to the thick black logo by '68), largely to make the brand name more visible at a distance! The #spaghettilogo on a small headstock was too hard to read if you weren’t in the front row of the concert! It’s always about marketing, isn’t it?

So I have been looking through pics from past years and realizing “man, I have owned a LOT of #guitars over the last few years!”

So I’m gonna inundate you with a little series I’m calling “Now You’re Just Some Guitars That I Used to Know”. Yay!

First up: #Lefty converted to righty 2007 #AmericanStandard #Stratocaster in #BlizzardPearl. I picked this #Strat up for cheap and had a right-handed nut installed so I could do a “reverse #Hendrix” thing. If you have ever played an upside down Stratocaster, your appreciation for Hendrix is automatically doubled. It’s not easy to do for a myriad of reason which I won’t go into. I sold this #guitar to a guy from #Brazil who was in #Canada on holiday!

Taking a quick break from #GibSunday to bring you back to #Straturday with this lovely #lefthanded #Nash 2009 #SS63 #Stratocaster #Relic #replica at @folkwaymusic, #Waterloo (Canada). For a minute there I was tempted to buy this and do an upside down #Hendrix conversion on it. Then I remembered one important thing: I. have. no. money!!! :D

Also, if you look in the back, you can see my favourite #5watt #amp, the @headstrong_amps #SC5. There’s also a used tweed 2011 Headstrong BL112, a custom-built recreation of a 5F3 Fender Deluxe in back on the left!

It’s another beautiful #Straturday morning in south central Canada. I have been playing this #guitar all week because I have decided to (finally!) spend some serious #practice time learning #JimiHendrix licks for the first time in my life! I suck at #Jimi-style playing but that’s why I’m really putting in some effort to improve. I learned the solo to “#WindCriesMary” - it’s not too difficult from a technical perspective, but it employs everything I love about #Hendrix’s style!

A brand new #MIM #Fender #Jimi #Hendrix #Stratocaster in a #Woodstock-approved #OlympicWhite with maple neck.

I don’t usually go bananas for new #guitars - used and #vintage is my natural habitat. But every now and then a new #guitarl comes along that I just love…and this is one of them. Although the price is a bit steep for an #Ensenada-built Fender (but then again ALL prices are to high these days…), I really like the reverse #headstock and #bridge #pickup, and I REALLY like how it doesn’t say “#JimiHendrix” on it anywhere noticeable…I just prefer signature models that don’t scream “I’m a signature model” in your face at high volume! ;) I failed to check if the neck had a skunk stripe…if they are being historically accurate it really shouldn’t…I think all late 60s maple necks were so-called “#maplecap” necks, and so should not have a #skunkstripe.

I promise you the most musically interesting 10 minutes you will spend today if you choose to watch this entire video of Monte Montgomery covering Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing”.  I can guarantee you will not feel you have wasted your time.  

The beginning will impress you…and if you stick with it, you’ll find at the end you will be scooping your blown mind off the floor!  

I only have 3 things to say about this performance:

  1. “Wow”,
  2. “I hereby announce that I can no longer, in good conscience, call myself a ‘guitar player’ after seeing this man play” and …
