A significant increase in the trend of generating municipal solid waste has been recorded around ... more A significant increase in the trend of generating municipal solid waste has been recorded around the world. This can be attributed to increasing population, changing lifestyles, globalization, economic growth and pollution. The objective of writing this paper was to study and understand the composition of solid waste generated in the selected educational institutions and the prevailing practices related to its effective management and disposal. Twenty-six schools from nine zones of Delhi participated in the study over a period of one year. Data obtained through survey revealed seven main categories of solid waste produced in schools; namelypaper, plastic, metal, glass, organic, textiles and e-waste. It was found that 50.77% of the total waste generated in schools was sent to MCD Dhalao's and 49.23% was been taken care through different mediums like selling it to kabadiwalas (rag picker), collaborating with NGO, recycling/composting and using waste material for 'best out of waste' activities.

Children are effective recipients of information particularly in their early years of education. Learning through training is more effective and everlasting way of provoking students about environmental issues. It is indispensable practice when trying to bringchange in knowledge, attitude and practices towards generating ecological consciousness. Efficient and effective handling of solid waste in educational institutions starts with determini... more Efficient and effective handling of solid waste in educational institutions starts with determining its composition and methods adopted for disposal. Mapping of solid waste was carried out in four stages-(1) Nature of solid waste generated, (2) segregation of solid waste, (3) management of solid waste; and (4) quantum of waste disposed. The waste generated was categorized under 8 major heads (waste paper, plastic, electronics, furniture, garden, food, textiles and other wastes) and sub-heads to understand the waste stream from generation to final treatment and disposal. Results revealed that most of the waste generated in school was gathered at the main collection point of the school without segregation. Furniture and garden waste were the only two categories sorted/ segregated. More than half of the waste produced in selected schools was regularly discarded (51.60%), however, data also revealed that 15.17% of this waste was organic in nature which has the potential to be recycled to reduce the overall impact on the environment. In the light of the results obtained, it is essential to understand the need for incorporating corrective measures aimed at improving solid waste treatment and increasing awareness among school children. Dependency of human beings on basic biological systems for life, health and amusement has had an impact on the conservation of ecosystem, climate stability and recovery of natural resources. Waste is a necessary evil and one human's cant run away from. Numerous studies reveal that more than 60% of municipal solid waste generated in the country is disposed in an unscientific manner creating problems to environment and human wellbeing. The aim of the article is to provide a comprehensive review of environmental, social, health and economic impacts of solid waste and provide an overview of opportunities for laying the foundation to healthy living. The study is concluded with few effective solutions for encouraging mankind to work towards a healthy ecosystem .

The antiquity that Braus and Disinger (1998) surrounds this landgives its people a sense of place and helps them unite as a nation (Cadw, 2011). The elements of international significance, world heritage sites, rural landscape and the people have given India its global recognition (Cadw, 2011). Historical evidence suggests that ancient India was a creation of Lord Brahma and the various components of ecosystem followed the cosmic sequence from formation to destruction. It is an endless cycle of life and death succeeding from one era to another. ABSTRACT : Considering the activities of humans damaging the environment, it is believed that environment education along with sound legislations and Eco-Clubs can lead to sustainable management of resources and ensure responsible actions by young individuals. Eco-Clubs are a part of schools in Delhi with their primary aim to generate environment consciousness among school and college students. They work with a belief that learning is more everlasting and enhanced during growing years. The present research highlights the Eco-Clubs activities and their relevance in inculcating the right habits among young citizens of India. The exploration points out that educational institutions of Delhi involve themselves in activities by enhancing learning through observation, community interaction and cultivating a scientific temper. This paper is an attempt to illustrate the impact of environmental campaigns in educating the youth of this nation.

Management of solid waste has become a major issue affecting nations around the world. Rapid urbanization, increasing population and unplanned development clubbed with the problem of solid waste management in the country is worsening every day. In an effort to build a resource efficient India, it is important to improve waste management practices. With the changing perspective, there is a need to understand the ecological concern and evaluate past policies, frameworks and strategies developed for a sustainable ecosystem. After been neglected for long, SWM is slowly receiving momentum and towns across the country are demonstrating successful models of effective operating systems and infrastructure changes making it possible to monitor waste and make country waste free. The present paper reviews the existing legal policies and profiles available for management of solid waste in India. It makes use of database, legislative policies, programmes and regulations to instill a common approach for management of environment.

Eco-club is the largest programme in the country promoting environment conservation and protection among masses. This study aims to investigate the involvement of schools in selected eco-club activities based on the 60-point scoring list developed to rank them. 26 schools, selected from nine zones of the city formed part of the research. According to the findings of the study, most of the schools had about 50% participation in the listed eco-club activities. Planting trees and observing environmental days were the two most common activities opted by the educational institutions. School 1 from North Zone ranked highest with a score of 47 out of 60, however, the performance of West Zone was best owning to good participation from all schools in the zone.
