It’s a good theory, but I don’t know why. I’m more inclined to think that the reason only Dymi was saved thanks to the lunar medallion was because he was the only possessor of a purifying magical object.
If we look at it, Sailor Moon is the only one with purification powers, capable of breaking mind control. The powers of each Sailor Senshi are the specialty of their home planets. So: The people of the Moon are experts in the arts of physical and spiritual purification, Mars in the protection and exorcism of evil spirits, Mercury in data analysis and collection, but also in healing, Jupiter in thunder and vegetation, and Venus in all kinds of metalworking.
Perhaps the entire quintet gave their boyfriends mystical objects from their homes, but rather than the Shitennou not using them out of social expectations, it was because they had different functions that didn’t include protection against brainwashing, unlike his master.

Currently reading: Well, I’ve read several fanfics, but in terms of novels, it would be Furyborn. It’s great if you’re interested in complex women and the deconstruction of the chosen one trope. It’s like Star Wars, but in the medieval era with magic.

Last song: Stromae Pomme. Ever since I heard it on Arcane, I’ve loved it, especially the Jinx and Ekko dance scene.

Last season: I’m currently watching several anime series. Like My Happy Marriage, The Apothecary Diaries, Frieren, and Castlevania. I also finished the Adolescence miniseries and I highly recommend it; it’s simply excellent.

Tea/Coffee: Honestly, I don’t like either of those, maybe because I heard as a kid that they stained teeth, or because someone pranked me by filling my glass with those two. I don’t know. I prefer water, juice, hot chocolate, and bubble tea.

Currently working on: Basically attending college and finishing my original novel and a fanfic. It’s been difficult to express my ideas, especially with the limited time I have. But I want to create a work that deconstructs literary tropes and cliches, from traditional fairy tales and magical girl anime like (especially) Sailor Moon, but without it being a Madoka 2.0 or a clichéd manwha where the supposed heroine is the bad guy. I want to write complex characters who are right but also wrong, and hope triumphs in the end.

I can’t say you’re wrong, the 90’s anime nerfed all the Sailors. Siren’s attack is ridiculous, the Sailors should have easily kicked her ass by that point.Something I always hated is how the Sailors always used only one attack in each season, forgetting their old attacks that could be useful. On top of that, in the second season they got second attacks just because, but during the entire first season where they’re supposed to remember the past because they were great warriors, they only have one attack. There are no episodes in the first season focused on improving their magic and physical abilities. Despite the filler.Ironically, the much shorter manga gives the Sailors a great repertoire of attacks from the first arc, because you know they are the reincarnation of powerful warriors.

In my opinion Sailor Moon’s sailor suit is iconic but it faces two major problems.
1) The passage of time: Thanks ironically to Sailor Moon’s success, several series of the Magic Girl genre were born, these new creative proposals accustomed us to more elaborate and personalized magic suits according to the user.
2) Loss of individuality: Let’s be honest, with each update, the Sailor Guardians’ suits became more like poor copies of Sailor Moon. I know they are a team but their combat skills and personalities are different.
3) Waste of Sailor V’s design: Am I the only one who cries about how superior Sailor Fuku is from V versus everyone else’s in general? It manages to balance protection and design. It should have been used as a base for the other uniforms, keeping the bases but adapting it to the user: Rei is elegant and a priestess. Mako is the best physical fighter but very feminine at the same time. Ami is more of a strategist but as time goes by she starts to improve her warrior skills and the costume reflects that. Usagi’s costume is basically a Sailor V cosplay but with less armor and more cuteness.
Not only will Minako keep her uniform, but when she’s pretending to be the Moon Princess she won’t wear a boring orange version of her costume, but it will be a version with the original colors but with more moon symbols and when the real princess wakes up, she will turn orange.

Naoko clearly wanted to design her characters with clothes suitable for them, but possibly with the demands of delivery and the limitations of animation in the 90s, it couldn’t be realized. But I think that in the power updates, she missed the opportunity to create new designs more faithful to her original idea. The super and eternal forms should have reflected the individual abilities of each user while still being uniform.
Regarding weapons, Naoko always had the desire for each Sailor Guardian to have their own weapons. In their opening notes, each transformation feather was supposed to become a weapon. The live-action anime took that idea up a notch, and gave the Sailor Guardians tambourines that became weapons in the final episode.
I totally agree that the 90s anime nerfed all the Sailor Guardians’ powers. It’s really ridiculous that at the end of the Dark Kingdom arc, the entire team, except Sailor Moon, have only one magic attack in their repertoire. No wonder a well-organized group of youmas kills them. Okay, this is also pathetic, these girls are supposed to have faced other youmas before, defeated the seven great youmas and the 4 generals, so how did they fall like flies before a simple team of monsters that are nothing special, just well organized?
The worst thing is that according to the flashback episode, “Usagis Awakening A Message From The Distant Past”, the Sailor Guardians from the past have only one magic attack. No wonder Metalia kills them immediately and the Moon Kingdom falls to such bad fighters. If the sailors had a past life they should be able to remember more magic attacks over time and improve their strategy. Especially Minako, she was the first to awaken as Sailor V. Her incompetence is the least likely.
It would have been an interesting plot point, if the girls started with only one attack and had to remember or learn new techniques, except Minako because she already went through that stage as Sailor V, in fact she makes use of Sailor V’s attacks, Venus Power, Love Crescent Shower and Venus Sulfur Smoke, and she does as a final or desperate attack Venus Love Megaton Shower (Seriously Sailor V’s attacks are better than any other attack Minako got even in her eternal form).
To be honest, something I hate in any magical girl show, is how just by giving a magic item to a minor, he suddenly becomes an expert in punches and magic spells, but if he fails because he has never fought in his life, he is treated as an embarrassment. It’s silly for Sailor Moon to repeat that formula, if they have a secret base, they should be equipped for serious training. As much as all of them (except Usagi) were fighters, and have some muscle memory, the key word being PAST LIFE, none of them are super soldiers today. They must train hard to be up to par and regain their powers.

This is one of the reasons why I would like a third Sailor Moon reboot, but not one that is simply more faithful to the manga, but one that develops more of the plot proposed in the source material but does not suffer from a low budget and poor special effects from 2003, you know things that the Live-Action adaptation suffered from. An adaptation similar to Voltron and She-ra, both managed to create a rich story based on the source material, simply by developing it.
I love Naoko’s art, but to be honest the design of the Sailor Fukus aged badly, not in the sense that they are very sexualized or anything like that, just nowadays, thanks ironically to the success of Sailor Moon, the Mahou Shojo genre took off bringing successful series like Pretty Cure, Tokyo Mew Mew and Mermaid Melody. The costume design in those series managed to balance between a uniform outfit for the entire team but still being able to distinguish each other by the various variations in each outfit that highlighted the personality and/or abilities of each member. For example in Tokyo Mew Mew, Mint who is more agile thanks to being a ballet dancer, the skirt of her magical girl costume is shorter than Ichigo’s skirt, to allow her more movement. The same with another member, Retasu, whose power is water, her costume looks more like a swimsuit because her specialty is marine combat.
I’m not including other even more iconic series, such as Mahō Shōjo Lyrical Nanoha, Kill la Kill and Madoka Magica, whose images appear in the post I reblog. Because their costumes are not uniforms, they only represent the user who wears them.
Going back to the previous point, the problem with the Sailor Fukus is that only their colors vary from each other, and well at the beginning also the accessories and shoes of each Sailor, but as the series progresses, only Sailor Moon’s design stands out, while the designs of the rest of the Sailors lose the details that differentiated them from each other. This is terrible, first it takes away the individuality of each Sailor Guardian, and each one has a different fighting style, for example Jupiter and Uranus, are more physically combative so their Sailor Fuku should be designed to not hinder a fight with punches and kicks. Wearing a skirt with ruffles and having swollen shoulder pads like a Disney princess should be prohibited for them. However, both use the same Eternal form as Usagi, with less details. It shouldn’t be like this, Usagi is the least skilled in physical terms but has the greatest magical power, her uniform can be more pretty than practical, because I repeat, physical combat is not her specialty. But the rest of the Sailors have a different repertoire of attacks, so it is not practical to wear the poor version of their leader’s dress.

If you’ve seen Naoko’s art, you can tell that she has pretty good taste in fashion and is meticulous about details, but the anime was made in the 90s, there were limitations to what the animators could do, just look at how simplified Princess Serenity’s dress was in the 90s anime, just to make it easier to animate. If you look at Naoko’s beta designs for the main crew, it’s clear that the author was initially looking to create more personalized designs that represented each member’s personality/combat abilities. There’s some interesting armor in the sketches, Sailor Moon the least combat oriented has the least protection, followed by Sailor Mercury who is more of the strategist of the group, and Mars and Venus wear more armor because they are the most combative both with magical attacks and magical weapons. The only one whose design doesn’t convince me is Sailor Jupiter, my girl is the best in a physical fight but that suit gives her 0% protection if she gets punched back, she should have more protection especially on her fists and legs, but obviously without ceasing to look feminine.
Another curiosity that reaffirms that originally Naoko planned to highlight the physical abilities of the other sailors, unlike Sailor Moon’s more magical abilities and Sailor Mercury’s analytical abilities, by means of the transformation pens/pencils/pencil case. In her original ideas, the pens changed shape. Mars’ and Jupiter’s pens became weapons, Moon’s pen became a Magic Wand and Mercury’s pen became a computer. Solo doesn’t plan a magical change in Venus’ pen, but she still has the Crescent Compact and the Wink Chain as weapons. That idea was taken up again in the Live-Action, when the tambourines become weapons.

Another thing that needs to be redesigned is the appearances of all the sailors in the Silver Millennium. Their sailor fuku stand out negatively in the medieval setting of the past, especially when compared to the shitennou, who wear armor. I know they are literally SAILORs, but what if they wear armor similar to Sailor Galaxy please? Even in a fictional High Fantasy setting, Sailor fukus seems anachronistic. Also, the fact that Sailors doesn’t wear exactly the same clothes as in the Silver Millennium serves the plot. Let’s be honest, Beryl falling for the deception that Sailor Venus is the princess and not Sailor Moon is stupid. The rest of the Dark Kingdom can be forgiven because they have their memories hidden, but Beryl is supposed to remember everything. That woman was spying on Endymion, so she was constantly seeing Serenity, whose hairstyle is extravagant and exactly the same as Sailor Moon’s. And Sailor Venus in the manga was the one who killed her in both lives, so they are very important people that she shouldn’t forget, much less confuse them with each other, especially if they look identical in their past lives. The live-action attempted to fix that plot hole by including little waves in Sailor Venus’ hair and not giving Princess Serenity Sailor Moon’s hairstyle, but it falls flat when you realize that Princess Serenity has the same hair color as Usagi in her civilian form, just loose. And in this adaptation, the sailors have no problem transforming in front of their enemies, so why didn’t Beryl recognize her rival with pigtails?
If I had been in the costume department for the live-action, I would have chosen a silver wig for Serenity, also styled with odangos but instead of pigtails the rest of her hair was loose (similar to Nehellenia and human Luna’s hairstyle). This honors the manga that draws Serenity with silver hair but without making the bad guys look so stupid for not recognizing their archrival.
