The reform desired by the Pope concerns a unique religious order, not least because it includes members who are not consecrated by religious profession. In fact, the reform concerns all members of the Order, committed to defending the faith and serving the poor along a path of personal sanctification and Christian witness. In a particular way, the new discipline aims to foster the full observance of religious vows by the friars along with their commitment to the service of the Church and in the Order and their direct responsibility in the direction and governance
of the Order. In addition, provision is made for the restoration of the common life of the friars.

New communities were also formed with an internal organization and a hierarchical structure under the hierosolimitan convent, in which the exercise of hospitality to the poor, the sick and pilgrims required considerable human energy and economic resources. The lay nature of the Order was also reflected in the denomination of the offices carried out by the friars, who adopted a lexicon borrowed from the noble courts, rather than from the monasteries or the canonicals, and that, although with some similarities, did not even refer to the military bodies. The Hospitallers, in fact, were slow to become militarized, although they had undertaken to support the defensive apparatus of the Christian territories in the Holy Land. Even in their original spirituality, according to an eschatological perspective, the charitable character of the Hospitaller vocation and their total donation to the needy for the love of God prevailed.

However, in the 1970s its last and most recent monastery was planned, which was built in the city of Zamora. The architectural project arranged the place for the chapel, although it deferred
its design for a later moment. This task was entrusted to the renowned sculptor José Luis Alonso Coomonte, who at that time was perhaps the most avant-garde creator of sacred art in Spain. We propose to study this intervention, which stands out for its unitary and integral character, moving away from the mere and habitual furnishing of liturgical
spaces. The proposal constitutes probably the most singular contemporary artistic ensemble incorporated into the heritage of the Order of Malta in Spain.

The essay examines what tradition has transmitted, and then recognizes the elements attested by contemporary sources, which make it possible not only to trace, as for as possible, a reliable biographical profile of the blessed, but also to go back with greater truthfulness to the early religious experience of the Jerusalem Hospitallers.

The Order of St John and the Order of the Temple mainly developed their presence in the administrative and assistential field, while the German Knights accomplished the military conquest and contributed to defend what had been Christianized, under the rule of the Pope, fighting against the resistance of Pagan tribes and the expansion of Orthodox Russians. Finland is a case of its own, because its Christianization was promoted by the Crown of Sweden without the contribution of the Chivalric Orders. Thanks to the protection of the Pontiff, even far Finland became a part of Christian Europe.
