Urban rail transit in the People's Republic of China encompasses a broad range of urban and suburban electric passenger rail mass transit systems including subway, light rail, tram and even maglev.[1] Some classifications also include non-rail bus rapid transport. Several Chinese cities had urban electric tramways in the early 20th century, which were dismantled in the 1950s-1970s. Nanjing had an urban railway from 1907 to 1958. Today China boasts both the world's longest and second longest metro systems.[2][3][4] Out of the top 10 busiest metro systems in the world 4 of them are in China. The first subway in China was built in Beijing in 1969. The Tianjin Metro followed in 1984. Since 2000, the growth of rapid transit systems in Chinese cities has accelerated.[3] The Shanghai Metro despite being the world's longest only started operating in 1993.[3][4][5] From 2009 to 2015, China built 87 mass transit rail lines, totaling 3100 km, in 25 cities at the cost of ¥988.6 billion.[6] Of the new metro systems to be built between now and 2015, 16% will be in the Pearl River Delta, 25% in the Yangtze River Delta and 24% in the Jingjinji region.[7] As of 2012, China averages 270 km of new rapid transit mileage per year.[8] Hong Kong’s MTR is the combination of the former KCRC and the MTR corporation. The MTR now has investment and management stakes in the rapid transit systems of several mainland Chinese cities. As of early 2016, China has 3195.6 km of subway lines.[9]

Notes

  1. The first of the Beijing Subway was completed in 1969 but did not open for trial operation until 1971 and it was restricted to riders with credential letters. The subway was fully opened to the public without credential letters in 1981.
  2. 2.0 2.1 The Guangzhou Metro Annual ridership data is combined with Guangfo Metro.
  3. The Guangfo Metro sometimes counts FMetro line 1.
  4. The Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (MTR) consists of the main MTR subway system, which opened in 1979, and the Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR), which opened in 1910 and was electrified in 1983. The two systems merged in 2007. Data no counts light rail lines. The ridership figures for the MTR does not include cross-border train service riders and includes only ridership on the MTR lines, airport express and light rail and certain MTR bus lines. The MTR compiles light rail and MTR bus line riders in one category so it is not possible to separate MTR bus riders from light rail riders. See [1]
  5. The "S lines" are counted under the Suburban rapid rail section.
  6. The Shanghai Metro is the longest network in the world. See Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found.
  7. The Tianjin Metro closed down for upgrades in 2001 and reopened in 2006.
