One of the best things about this movie is how it constantly subverts your expectations. A great example is the mean girl from school. A typical movie would have her be a major villain. Yawn! This movie flicks that character arc away like the annoying mosquito that it is.
It's like I can feel the writers taking all the obvious ideas they came up with during the first draft and then using them for cannon fodder.
Take the house itself…
Amaze as Ryan Reynolds climbs a ladder and the directors scramble to turn it into an action sequence because they don't want to pay for stunt doubles and re-takes.
A strangely immersive movie. It's a treat for the senses, with a kernel of substance.
The story is surprisingly dark. There's a running theme through the movie of various ponies losing hope and being taught how to keep their spirits up.
Great voice cast (Madeline Kahn, Nancy Cartwright a.k.a. Bart Simpson, Danny DeVito, among others) the villains were cute in a scary way.
Some of the songs were actually really good, especially "I'll go it alone" which could have been written by Dee Dee Ramone.
Probably my all-time fave. Despite thinking Gallo is a pretty gross person.
