An upsetting and beautiful movie that manages to communicate something meaningful about death without a saccharine or sarcastic gloss. Held back from perfection by a handful of frankly atrociously written scenes that feel deeply out of place on the front and back ends.
A very good movie. There are a few character relationships that could have been explored more thoroughly, and certainly would have justified a slightly beefier runtime, but the compelling premise, great performances and beautiful visuals more than make up for that.
Not quite as excruciatingly perfect as Judgement at Nuremberg, but kind of a perfect retrospective on the pre-war build up to Nazism. It's nice to see a movie that really is just an assemblage of characters whose stories don't neatly tie together in one big plot bow at the end. It's a sign of strong writing that they thematically hang together even so.
Lanthimos has a great control of spaces, and specifically the kinds of generically luxurious spaces produced by a certain kind of wealth. I think these are the kinds of roles Jessie Plemmons was born for (see also I'm thinking of ending things, Judas and the Blsck Messiah) i.e. ones where he is a cipher for painful power differentials.
Obviously Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Hong Chau are great too, but I think their performances cover a much wider range of types and feel more like characters.
