  decadent horror pulp. completely immersive from the very beginning. a campfire tale stretched strange and vivid into leering life. a terrible wonderful audio/visual feast. i’d been meaning to see this for years and it did not disappoint.

  Very honest, with an interesting perspective on romance and some great performances. The whole thing has a light and casual quality that mirrors the connection at the center of it. Playing aloof is part of this game. Everyone aims to keep cool. You end up with a sensation like staring at the waves of a patch of ocean that it’s impossible to know the depth of. This may be the film’s greatest strength, greatest weakness, or both.

  Wasn’t a big fan of this one. I might give it another shot some day because everyone else seems to like it. Some of the performances were great, others felt a little wooden but honestly I blame the dialogue for that which frequently sounded forced and unnatural to me. I enjoyed Giammatti’s performance but his character started out unlikable and although the story managed to make him a sympathetic character with a good heart, he’s still bitter, smug, and boorishly…
